"Half of them don't even know who the General is. And never will. They don't know what a city is, much less a government."
"You're very depressing. Do you think the General knows this?"
"He ought to. TTiey're his people. I assume that's why he wanted to try and indoctrinate them."
"Well . . . what a clear night! That's one of the advantages of living in the tropics. You can almost always tell what the weather's going to be. It never rains in the dry season and in the wet season it never stops, except at scheduled intervals/'
"I'm going for another drink/'
"I shall stay here."
"And look at the jungle?"
"No, the lawn." Both laughed.
At the bar, Elena spoke to him as he intended she should. "I haven't seen you all evening. Here's George."
"We had a chat this morning," said George, putting an arm about Elena's waist.
"Were you at the barracks?"
George nodded.
"And you didn't take me! Fm furious with yoiL Well, what's your impression? Are we going to win? Is Captain Nelson going to lead us to victory?"
"I think we're going to win." George ignored her attempt at lightness. He was heavy. "We have the advantage andâ"
"Oh, look, they're dancing!" Elena pointed to several lieutenants who were doing a folk dance together. "Come on, Peter, let's dance. Til show you how."
